STEPHENVILLE, Texas – After dropping a pair of matches to ranked opponents to open the season, the Lamar women’s tennis team was simply too much to handle for Tarleton as the Lady Cardinals swept past the TexAnns in 7-0 fashion on Friday at Tarleton Tennis Complex.

“I was very happy with the performance today, and I think the girls played up to their potential,” head coach David Wong said. “This is a solid win over a good team, and now we’re looking forward to seeing North Texas on Sunday.”

The Lady Cards got out to a hot start against Tarleton, which entered the match ranked 28th in Division II, winning on all three courts in doubles to secure the first point.

Carolina Salas and Hélène Czudek picked up an 8-6 win over Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez on court one, and the duo of Alicia Porte and Carolina Masó won 8-2 over Makenzie Mitchell and April Downing at No. 2.

Natalia Mayagoitia and Dariya Dashutina capped the opening salvo with an 8-5 decision over Melanie Barnes and Ivana Zecevic at the third spot.

It was more of the same in singles, as Salas handed Perez a 6-4, 6-0 decision at the top spot. The second proved trickier, however, for Porte, who recovered from a dropped first set to defeat Martinez in 6-7, 6-2, 10-8 fashion.

Masó took home a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Barnes at No. 3, Mayagoitia won 6-2, 6-2 against Zecevic at No. 4, and Czudek cruised to a pair of 6-1 wins over Silvia Nieva in the fifth spot. Dariya Dashutina completed the impressive display with a 6-0, 6-2 decision on court six.

“I think the play from the first two matches definitely carried over to today,” Wong explained. “We played very solid in those matches even though we lost, and that helped us develop the discipline to stay consistent and follow the strategy. It really paid off today, but now we need to continue it to Sunday.”

LU and the 54th-ranked Mean Green will battle it out Sunday at 11 a.m. at Waranch Tennis Complex in Denton.
