EL PASO, Texas - The Lamar women's tennis team suffered a disappointing 4-3 non-conference loss to Air Force on Sunday morning at the El Paso Tennis Club.
The Lady Cardinals fell to 0-3 on the year, while Air Force improved to 2-2 overall.
LU opened the match by winning its first doubles point of the season behind an impressive performance by the No. 1 team of Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander. The duo rolled over AF's Kat Bushey and Karissa Walker, 8-0, for their second consecutive doubles victory. Senior Hayley Bakker and Marion Brument joined forces for the first time this season, and the pair posted an 8-4 win at the No. 3 spot. With the doubles point secured, Lamar headed into singles play in search of its first win of the season.
In singles play, junior Kendall Gibbs lost at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-0, followed by a straight set loss by Martinez to AF's Bushey, 6-2, 6-3. Shelander came up with her first win of the season at the No. 3, shutting down Katie Tomkie, 6-4, 6-2.
Bakker, a native of Melbourne, Australia, seemed poised to win her first match of the year at the No. 4 after winning the first set 6-3. But Lauren Wilson of Air Force rallied in the next two sets to win 6-2, 6-0. Brument, a freshman from Groffliers, France, won her first match of the season at the No. 5 spot, taking care of Liza Vaccaro, 6-4, 6-3. Fellow freshman Marine LeRoy fell in the No. 6 position, 7-5, 6-4 to Miclynn Crail.
