LAS CRUCES, N.M. – It wasn’t easy for the Lamar women’s tennis team on Saturday, but when things got tight, the Lady Cardinals responded, winning three tiebreaks in singles to pick up a 4-3 victory over Northern Arizona at New Mexico State Tennis Center.

The Ladyjacks got the early momentum by taking home the doubles point. The team of Alicia Porte and Carolina Masó grabbed an early advantage with a 6-3 victory over Emelia Box and Hailey Rochin, but NAU responded with 6-4 decisions on the other two courts to take the 1-0 lead.

Dariya Dashutina earned the only straight sets LU point, beating Box 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles to even things up. Johannna Vang and Hailey Rochin picked up singles victories for NAU, beating Porte (6-4, 7-5) and Hanna Elfving (6-2, 6-1), respectively.

Both Masó and Anna Spengler came back from opening set losses to take home points for the Lady Cards. Masó won 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 over Jordan Denesik at No. 3, and Spengler earned a 2-6, 7-6, 10-6 decision at the fifth spot.

Katya Lapayeva won the opening frame 6-0 at the sixth position, marking the fourth consecutive set she’d blanked an opponent. However, Sarah Maria Spruch responded with a 6-4 win in the second to even things up. Lapayeva ultimately won out in 10-7 fashion to bump LU to 2-2 on the season.

The Lady Cards will close out the weekend on Sunday with a match at UTEP. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
