Lady Cards shine in win over Illinois State

EL PASO - The bottom half of the Lamar line-up put together an outstanding showing on Saturday, leading the Lady Cardinal women's tennis team to a 5-2 victory over the Redbirds of Illinois State. "I thought that the ladies were very focused today," head coach David Wong said. "I'm pleased with the way that they played, especially in doubles and from lines 3-7. They fought really hard and now I'm looking forward to tomorrow's match with UTEP." Alicia Porte and Carolina Masó led the way in doubles, combining for an 8-2 win over Carolina Abello and Stefanie Youngberg. The duo of Natalia Mayagoitia and Dariya Dashutina also did well, winning 8-4 over Ashton and Heather Nisbet. Carolina Salas and Hélène Czudek lost 8-4 at No. 1 doubles to Phyllis Tigges and Emmie Marx. In singles, Masó knocked off Tigges at the third spot in 6-4, 7-6 fashion, and Dashutina picked up a 6-0, 6-4 decision at line four over Youngberg. Alessandra Pennesi secured the LU victory with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Heather Nisbet at No. 5, and Mayagoitia rounded out the card with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Gabby Phillips at the sixth spot. At No. 1, Salas fell to Marx 6-1, 4-6, 10-3, and Porte lost 6-4, 6-3 to Abello at No. 2. Czudek also played a singles match, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Sarah Paulson. With the win, the Lady Cards have now won two in a row and sit at 3-3 this season. They will return to action on Sunday morning on the campus of UTEP.
