EL PASO - After picking up a 5-2 victory over Illinois State on Saturday, the Lamar women's tennis team got sidetracked on Sunday, falling 4-2 to host UTEP.
Alessandra Pennesi and Natalia Mayagoitia kept up their impressive weekends with Pennesi taking home an emphatic 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jamie Leigh Michau at No. 5 and Mayagoitia winning 6-0, 6-2 over Matilda Rose Tench in the sixth position. Pennesi improved to 3-0 in singles play for the spring, and Mayagoitia rebounded from back-to-back losses earlier this month with a pair of victories on the weekend.
Unfortunately for the Lady Cardinals, the rest of the team fell in singles. Carolina Salas dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Rebeca Calvillo at the top spot, and Alicia Porte lost 6-2 to Martina Trierweiler in both sets at No. 2. Gabi Vazquez completed the top half sweep with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Carolina Masó at No. 3.
Dariya Dashutina's match vs. Marie LeBlond proved to be the most important. The Ukrainian bounced back from a 6-4 loss in the first to to win the second 7-6, but she would go on to lose the tiebreak and give UTEP the all-important fourth point.
"We just need to work on believing in ourselves," head coach David Wong said. "We have the ability to win these kinds of matches, and we've shown that this year. If we keep up our confidence and stick to the strategy, we will usually win."
The two sides did not play for the doubles point.
Lamar dropped to 3-4 on the season, and UTEP improved to 5-6. The Lady Cards will return to action next week at Thompson Family Tennis Center when the Red Wolves of Arkansas State make the trip to Beaumont.
