Lady Cardinals Tennis Opens SLC Play with 6-1 Over SFA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team opened Southland Conference play on Friday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin at the Schleif Tennis Complex in Nacogdoches, Texas.

With the win the Lady Cardinals improve to 4-1 on the year and 1-0 in Southland Conference play while SFA drops to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in league play.

The Lady Cardinals began the match by winning the doubles point with their top pair of Andrea Martinez and Mariaryeni Gutierrez defeating Gabriela Gadeva and Tanya Smolnikova 8-2 at No. 1, while Salina Aranda and Kaltrina Harbuzi combined for an 8-1 win over Sanjana Kapur and Christelle Kaempfer at No. 3. The Ladyjacks picked up a win at No.2 as Roxana Enica and Mary Harrison outlasted Manijee Ashrafi and Maria Gutierrez 8-7.

In singles play the Lady Cards cruised past SFA, wining their five points in straight sets. Andrea Martinez won at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1 over Enica and Mariaryeni Gutierrez posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kapur at No. 3. Kaltrina Harbuzi won 6-4, 6-2 over Harrison, Ashrafi downed Smolnikova 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 and Anahita Jagtiani grabbed a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kaempfer at No. 6.
 

 

The lone SFA point came at No. 4 singles where Gadeva held off Maria Gutierrez 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.

The Lady Cardinals are back on the court on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. when they take on the Sam Houston State Bearkats in Huntsville, Texas.
