BEAUMONT – Katya Lapayeva and Anna Spengler each continued their solid freshman campaigns on Sunday, but unfortunately for the Lamar women’s tennis team, the duo’s efforts were not enough as the Lady Cardinals fell 5-2 to visiting Southeastern Louisiana at Thompson Family Tennis Center.

Lapayeva, a native of Belarus, was impressive in her performance, beating Margaux Kaltenbacher 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5 singles to improve to 6-2 on the season, and Spengler came from behind to improve to 3-4. The German bounced back from a 6-4 setback to Avika Sagwal in the opening set to win 7-6 in the second and take home the tiebreaker in 10-6 fashion.

In other singles action, Dariya Dashutina lost 6-2, 7-6 to Renee Villarreal at No. 1, and Nastya Tokareva held on for a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Carolina Masó at the second spot. On Court 4, Hanna Elfving fell 6-2, 6-4 to Reginka Nychytailova.

Alicia Porte was able to force a third set at No. 3 singles, but Valya Rusakova was up to the task, winning 6-1, 4-6, 6-0.

Dashutina and Elfving combined for an 8-3 decision over the tandem of Kaltenbacher and Tokareva in No. 2 doubles, but it wasn’t enough as the Lady Cardinals fell 8-1 and 8-2 on the other two courts.

LU, which dropped to 3-5 and 1-1 in Southland play, will return to action with a conference road trip to Nicholls and McNeese State next weekend.
