HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
The Lamar University women's tennis team dropped their first round match against Arkansas-Little Rock 5-0 Friday morning, at the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Classic held at the Hattiesburg Racquet Club.
The Lady Cardinals dropped the doubles point to start the match, as Rosario Negrete and Bindiya Parekh took out Tanya Roberts and Pamela Martinez 8-1 at No. 2 doubles and Outi Jarvinen and Ellie Vicary outlasted Maria Gutierrez and Kendall Gibbs 9-8 to take the doubles point. Lamar did get one win in doubles play, as Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander defeated Laetitia Bourgeon and Jenna Hirdle 8-6, to improve to 11-1 on the season.
In singles play Lamar failed to pick up a point, as ULAR closed out the match with wins at two, three, five and six. Jarvinen took out Shelander 6-0, 1-6, 6-0 at No. 2, Parekh downed Roberts 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 Bourgeon knocked off Gutierrez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 and Negrete beat Gibbs 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
The Lady Cardinals were leading at No.1, as Andrea Martinez led 6-4, 4-1 and Pamela Martinez was leading 7-5, 3-1 at No. 4 before the match was decided in ULAR's favor at 5-0. The matches were unfinished because the match had been decided before their completion.
The Lamar women will be in action again Saturday morning at 10 a.m. when they take on either Syracuse or West Virginia.
