BEAUMONT – The Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center has turned into a fortress for the Lamar women’s tennis team, and visiting Oral Roberts is just the latest conference foe to fall victim to the Lady Cardinals at the complex, losing 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Lamar, which has played its last three matches at the complex due to ongoing work at the Thompson Family Tennis Center on campus, has outscored opponents 19-2 in the matches with victories over Southland foes McNeese State, Central Arkansas and now Oral Roberts.
With the win, Lamar improved to 8-7 on the year with a 4-1 mark in SLC play.
For the third consecutive match, the Lady Cards established themselves early by capturing the doubles point. The team of Hélène Czudek and Carolina Salas battled it out to an 8-6 win on court one. Meanwhile, the duo of Carolina Masó and Alicia Porte as well as that of Dariya Dashutina and Natalia Mayagoitia made short work of lines two and three, winning 8-3.
In singles, both Masó and Mayagoitia turned in impressive straight-sets victories with the latter taking home a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Rachel Scroggs at No. 6 and the former winning 6-2, 6-2 against Melanie Marlin at No. 2.
Salas was strong as well, fighting through a tight first set to win 7-5, 6-1 vs. Haley Martin at the top spot, and Alicia Porte had to work for the victory too, winning 7-5, 6-4 over Tori Dollar at line four.
Alessandra Pennesi cruised to 6-0 win in the first set vs. Natalia Dollar, but had to fight off a surge in the second to win 7-5 at the fifth spot.
Dashutina was the only Lady Card to be pushed to a tiebreak, but she came through with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 decision over Marizanne Bouwer at No. 3.
Lamar will hit the road for the final time this season next weekend with trips to Sam Houston State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
