SAN ANTONIO – UTSA battled to a tough doubles point and never looked back on Thursday as the Lamar women’s tennis team fell 7-0 to the former Southland rival Roadrunners at UTSA Tennis Center.

Jacobea Junger and Miriam Rosell Canudas got things going for UTSA (10-7) with an 8-2 victory over Carolina Masó and Alicia Porte at No. 1 doubles. However, it would prove to be a more difficult task at the other two positions. Unfortunately for the Lady Cardinals, Daniela Garcia-Diaz and Alena Shichkova were able to hold off Dariya Dashutina and Hanna Elfving for an 8-6 win at the second spot.

Lina Hallgren and Isabelle Jonsson were leading 7-6 over Katya Lapayeva and Anna Spengler when the round was halted.

In singles, Jonsson picked up a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Porte at line three to double the Roadrunner advantage, and Rosell Canudas put them a point away from clinching with 6-1, 6-2 decision vs. Masó at the second spot. Lapayeva, who won the first set 6-4, saw her three-match winning streak halted by dropping the ensuing two 6-2, 6-1  to Nicole Karaklis at No. 4 to seal the match for the hosts.

In other action, Junger beat Dashutina 6-2, 6-3, and Hallgren defeated Elfving 6-2, 6-3. Spengler fell 6-4, 6-0 to Irene Gandara Gonzalez.

LU (4-10) will continue its three-match road trip with a meeting with Incarnate Word on Saturday.
