CORPUS CHRISTI – The doubles point proved to be the difference on Sunday afternoon as the Lamar women’s tennis team fell 4-3 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a Southland Conference encounter at Thomas J. Henry Tennis Center.
With the loss, Lamar dropped to 9-8 on the year and the Islanders improved to 13-3. Both teams are 5-2 in SLC play.
Lamar fell on all three doubles courts to hand the Islanders the early advantage. The duos of Carolina Maso/Alicia Porte and Natalia Mayagoitia/Dariya Dashutina each lost 8-4, and the team of Carolina Salas and Helene Czudek dropped a tight 8-7 decision at the top spot.
The Islanders kept it rolling in singles as Maider Martin handed Maso a 6-4, 7-5 loss at No. 2, and Sandra Burges held on for a 6-2, 7-5 win over Alessandra Pennesi at line four, giving TAMUCC the 3-0 advantage.
Sala put the Cards on the board next, bouncing back from an opening set loss to win 6-7, 6-2, 7-5, but it was all for naught as Dashutina was unable to complete her comeback attempt on Court 3, falling 6-1, 7-6 (9-7) to Stefania Nicolae.
In other singles action, Mayagoitia won 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 over Celia Rodriguez, and Czudek picked up a 6-4, 6-7, 10-7 victory vs. Leanne Mascall.
The loss halted the Lady Cards’ four-match winning streak, and LU will return to Beaumont next weekend to close out the regular season against Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin.
