Lady Cardinals Tennis Falls to UT-Arlington 5-1
April 10, 2007 COLLEGE STATION, Texas - - The Lamar University women's tennis team dropped a 5-1 decision to the University of Texas at Arlington on Monday, as the two teams met on the campus of Texas A&M University for a Southland Conference showdown. The loss drops Lamar's record to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in SLC play, while UTA improves to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Cardinals lone win came from freshman Kaltrina Harbuzi at No. 1 singles, as she knocked off Monika Peciulionyte 6-4, 6-4. Three of the singles matches went three sets, as Pamela Martinez fell to Simri van Rooyen 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (11-9) at No. 3, Sofya Lifanova defeated Manijee Ashrafi 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 and Manami Kuroda was knocked out by Marissa Brown 6-2, 4-6, 5-0. Maria Gutierrez fell at No. 2 for Lamar, dropping a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Sofya Lifanova. In doubles play Peciulionyte and van Rooyen defeated Martinez and Ashrafi 8-6 at No. 1, while Harbuzi and Gutierrez were taken down by Novakova and Sara Pesic 8-2 at No. 2. The Lady Cards will be back in action on Saturday morning, when they take on the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi at 10 a.m. at the Cardinal Courts.
