BEAUMONT - It was not an ordinary match for the Lamar women's tennis team at Thompson Family Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. With Anna Spengler battling in the deciding set on Court 6, a sudden downpour resulted in the match being moved to Houston for completion, and unfortunately for the Lady Cardinals, Abilene Christian took advantage to ultimately win 4-3.
It was a real battle for much of the day with the visitors from the Key City, beginning with a very tight doubles round. Alicia Porte and Carolina Masó picked up an 8-7 win over Kaysie and Micah Hermsdorf at No. 1, and the duo of Katya Lapayeva and Spengler would win by the same total over Nada Marjanovic and Emily Conrad to secure the point for the Red and White. On the other doubles court, Dariya Dashutina and Hanna Elfving fell 8-6 to Erin Walker and Brittney Reed.
In singles, Micah Hermsdorf struck back with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory over Dashutina on Court 1, and Walker took home a win at No. 2 with a 6-2, 7-6 decision over Masó. Porte celebrated her Senior Day in style, winning 7-5, 6-2 over Reed, and Lapayeva picked up her team-best 11th singles victory of the season in 6-1, 6-2 fashion vs. Kaysie Hermsdorf. However, a 6-3, 6-2 win by Marjanovic against Elfving at the fifth spot left the match tied at 3-3.
At No. 6, Spengler held on for a 7-6 opening set win over Conrad but dropped the second 6-2. As the match moved to the third, Spengler led 2-1 before inclement weather caused the delay and venue change. Conrad excelled after the break, coming back for another 6-2 victory.
The Lady Cards will close out the 2014 home slate on Tuesday with a match against Oral Roberts on Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
