BEAUMONT -- It was a Senior Day to remember for Natalia Mayagoitia, Alessandra Pennesi and Carolina Salas as the trio headlined a 7-0 drubbing of visiting Stephen F. Austin at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center on Sunday.
It was dominance across the board for the Lady Cardinal line-up as all three doubles teams won and all six singles players earned straight-set victories. The win improved Lamar to 11-8 on the year with a 7-2 record in Southland play. It also marked the seventh win in seven matches played at home this season.
"We played very solid today," head coach David Wong said. "SFA is a very good team, but we played very disciplined. I'm happy with the win and looking forward to the tournament in two weeks. I'm very pleased to be undefeated at home this year, and having good support and enthusiasm has been instrumental to our success here."
Salas and Mayagoitia started off their final regular season matches strong as Salas teamed with Hélène Czudek for an 8-6 victory over Malena Gordo and Julia Lorca, and Mayagoitia combined with Carolina Masó for an 8-4 decision vs. Margot de Haan and Laura Servise.
The duo of Alicia Porte and Dariya Dashutina closed out the doubles round with an 8-4 win against Kateryna Bugayenko and Valeria Terentyeva.
Salas was impressive once more in singles with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Gordo at the top spot, and Mayagoitia dominated Bugayenko 6-1, 6-1. at No. 4. Fellow senior Pennesi joined the party with a 7-5, 7-6 victory over Servise at line six.
"The seniors really stepped up today," Wong said. "You never know quite how the girls will play on Senior Day, and they really handled the pressure today and led the team."
In other singles play, Masó defeated Lorca 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2, and both Dashutina and Porte doled out 6-4, 6-2 decisions to de Haan and Teretyeva, respectively, at positions three and five.
Lamar will next play in just under two weeks at the Southland Tennis Championships, which will take place at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center from April 26-28.
