Lady Cardinals Cruise Past Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

Beaumont, Texas - On a cold windy Saturday afternoon, the Lamar University women's tennis team cruised to a 5-2 win over the Islanders of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Cardinal Courts in Beaumont, Texas. Despite playing with only five players, and defaulting a match in doubles play, the Lady Cards managed to grab the doubles point with a pair of wins. Pamela Martinez and Manijee Ashrafi blanked Carmen Abeaboeru and Alexandra Dyckman 8-0 at No. 1, while Maria Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi posted an 8-3 win over the tandem of Ciric and Erika Iriarte at No. 2 In singles play the Lady Cardinals did not drop a single set. Harbuzi took down Abeaboeru at No. 1m Gutierrez won 7-6, 6-2 at No. 2 and Martinez posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ciric at No. 3. Ashrafi collected a 6-2 6-4 win over Dyckman at No. 4 and Manami Kuroda took down Amanda Brahim 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5. The match at No. 6 was defaulted to Corpus Christi. The Lady Cards improved to 11-9 overall and 6-3 in Southland Conference play with the win. They will be in action again Sunday morning when they take on UT-San Antonio at 10:00.
