Islanders snap Lamar's winning streak
April 15, 2012
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Carolina Salas won her 15th singles match of the season, but it wasn't enough for the Lamar University women's tennis team in a 6-1 Southland Conference loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday. "We had trouble adjusting to the extreme windy conditions," Lamar coach David Wong said of the steady 30 mph winds. "As a result, we lost to a well-coached disciplined team." Salas improved to 15-6 at No. 1 singles with a 6-7, 6-3, 10-4 win over Mima Cicak at No. 1 singles. But by that time, the Islanders (14-4 overall, 7-3 Southland) already owned a 6-0 lead. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi swept the three doubles matches and the remaining five singles matches to snap Lamar's seven-match winning streak. "This is the first time in a long time we have lost to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi," Wong said. "This has become a heated, but friendly, rivalry. Lamar (12-9, 7-4) is idle until the Southland Conference Tournament in Nacogdoches, Texas, that gets under way April 27. Pairings will be announced soon. LAMAR
