BEAUMONT – It was a dominating showing on Tuesday afternoon at Thompson Family Tennis Center as the Lamar women’s tennis team handed visiting Oral Roberts a 5-0 decision.
With the win, the Lady Cardinals improved to 4-6 on the season in Southland play and further improved their positioning to make next weekend’s Southland Tournament. LU is now 7-12 on the year, and ORU dropped to 3-15 with an 0-11 league mark.
Freshmen have provided the bulk of the wins this season for the Lady Cardinals, and they would play a role in getting the show started on Tuesday as the duo of Anna Spengler and Katya Lapayeva handed an 8-0 decision to Mairead Cleary and Nika Munoz at No. 3 doubles. The tandem of Hanna Elfving and Dariya Dashutina clinched the point with an 8-2 victory over Ximena Puentes and Haley Martin at the second spot.
Alicia Porte and Carolina Masó were leading 5-4 over Melanie Marlin and Marizanne Bouwer on Court 1.
In singles, both Lapayeva and Spengler kept it going by beating Puentes and Munoz, respectively, in 6-0, 6-0 fashion at positions four and five. Elfving, also a freshman, won 6-0, 6-2 vs. Cleary on Court 6, and Dashutina picked up a 6-1, 6-3 victory on line one over Martin.
At No. 2, Masó dropped the opening set 6-4 to Bouwer but held a 5-4 lead in the second when the match was called. Porte was playing at No. 3 and beat Marlin 6-2 in the first and the duo was tied up at 2-2 in the second.
LU will close out the regular season later this week with matches at Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State.
