HOUSTON - Nationally-ranked University of Houston handed the Lamar women's tennis team a 5-1 loss on Sunday afternoon, as the Lady Cardinals wrapped up their regular season against the Cougars at John E. Hoff Tennis Courts.

The loss dropped Lamar to 14-10 on the year, while 70th-ranked Houston finished its season with a 15-8 overall record. The Lady Cardinals will now prepare for the six-team Southland Conference tournament which is slated to begin on Fri., Apr. 22 in San Antonio.

Sunday's match at UH featured only singles play, as a result of the Cougars playing Sam Houston State in a full match earlier in the day. With no doubles action, both teams were fighting to reach the four-point mark to clinch the match.

Lamar sophomore Andrea Martinez did her best to help the Lady Cardinals, as the Durango, Mexico native won her seventh straight singles match with a strong straight-set win over Houston's Biljana Dimovska at the No. 1 position. Martinez improved to 18-6 on the year with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Unfortunately, that was the only victory LU could muster against its nationally-ranked foe.

Senior Hayley Bakker and freshman Marion Brument both lost hard-fought, three-set contests at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots, despite putting forth solid efforts. Bakker saw her three-match win streak come to an end at the No. 3, as Houston's Brianna Bateup won the first and third set by 6-3 scores. Brument opened her No. 5 match with a 6-2 first-set win, but the Cougar's Tiffany McLoughlin bounced back to take the match, 6-3 and 6-1.

Houston also posted a trio of straight set wins at the No. 2, 4 and 6 slots to help seal the victory.
