NACOGDOCHES - The Lamar women's tennis team was carried by its freshman contingent on Saturday as all three picked up both singles victories and doubles victories to lead the Cardinals to a 5-2 win over Stephen F. Austin at Schlief Tennis Complex.
The freshman duo of Katya Lapayeva and Anna Spengler kicked it off for the Lady Cards, beating Laura Servise and Rachel Pierce in 8-2 fashion at No. 3 doubles. Hanna Elfving, LU's other freshman doubles player, teamed with a senior in Dariya Dashutina to take home an 8-4 victory over Denise Maxl and Macarena Acosta at the second spot to clinch the point.
In singles, Lapayeva continued her standout debut campaign, picking up a 2-6, 7-6, 10-3 victory over Julia Lorca at No. 4 for her team-leading 12th victory of the year. Spengler was impressive in a 6-3, 6-3 fifth line victory over Katerina Bugayenko, and Elfving handed a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Laura Servise in the sixth spot.
Carolina Masó was the only upperclassman to pick up a victory, beating Maxl 6-0, 7-5 at No. 2.
In other singles action, Dashutina fell 6-4, 7-5 to Malena Gordo, and Alicia Porte dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Valeria Terentyeva.
With the win, LU ends the 2014 regular season with an 8-13 overall record and a 5-7 Southland mark. SFA dropped to 11-10 and 7-5, respectively. The victory also clinched a spot in next weekend's Southland Tournament in Corpus Christi.
