Lady Cardinals Open SLC Tournament with 4-3 Win Over Texas State
April 20, 2007 SAN ANTONIO, Texas - - The No. 4 seed Lamar University women's tennis team opened the Southland Conference tennis tournament with a 4-3 win over the No. 5 Bobcats of Texas Sate, at the UTSA Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas San Antonio. With the match tied at three points apiece, the final point came down to the match at No. 5 singles. Lamar freshman Manami Kuroda opened the match against Texas State's Sumarie Muller with a 6-2 win in the first set, but Muller answered back with a 6-4 win of her own in the second set to tie the match. The third set was a nail biter for LU, but Kuroda clinched the match for the Lady Cards with a 7-5 win in the third set. Kaltrina Harbuzi and Pamela Martinez picked up the other two points for Lamar in singles play, giving the two teams a 3-3 split in singles. Harbuzi knocked off Ashley Ellis 6-1, 7-5 at No. 1 and Martinez posted a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win over Lainy Chafitz at No. 3. The Bobcats picked up points with wins at No. 2 and No. 4, as Lamar's Maria Gutierrez and Manijee Ashrafi were edged out. Gutierrez lost a tough 7-5, 7-5 decision to Andrea Giraldo at No. 2 and Ashrafi was taken down by Rabea Hartmann 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 4. The point at No. 6 singles was defaulted to Texas State due to the lack of LU players. The Lady Cardinals opened the match by taking the doubles point as Martinez and Ashrafi posted an 8-2 win over Chafitz and Hartmann at No. 1 doubles, while Harbuzi and Gutierrez knocked off Ellis and Giraldo. The win vaults Lamar into the semifinals of the SLC tournament, where they will face top seed Southeastern Louisiana at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.
