Lady Cardinals Tennis Falls to No. 1 Seed Southeastern Louisiana

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The No. 4 seed Lamar University women's tennis team had their season come to an end Saturday, falling to No. 1 seed Southeastern Louisiana 5-0 at the Southland Conference tennis tournament at the UTSA Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Texas San Antonio. The Lady Lions opened the match by taking the doubles point from LU, winning at No. 2 doubles and getting at point at No. 3 doubles due to a default by the Lady Cards. 2. Emilija Arnaudovska and Iva Velkovska defeated Maria Gutierrez and Kaltrina Harbuzi 8-5 in the two spot, while the match between Manijee Ashrafi and Pamela Martinez of Lamar and Nina Knavs and Breda Kovac of Southeastern at No. 1 was unfinished since SELA had already won the doubles point In singles play Velkovska knocked off Gutierrez 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2, Kovac posted a 7-5, 6-2 win over Martinez at No. 3 and Bonnie Phillips took down Manami Kuroda 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. The match hat No. 6 was defaulted to Southeastern, while the matches at No. 1 and No. 4 went unfinished. With the loss, the Lady Cardinals finish the season with a 14-10 record. Of their five players on the team this season, four will return next season, with Martinez, a senior, being the only player not returning. Harbuzi, Ashrafi and Kuroda were all freshman, and Gutierrez was a sophomore.
