CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After a grueling day on Friday that saw the Lamar women's tennis team depart Beaumont for Corpus Christi early in the morning and play late into the evening, the Lady Cards returned to action on Saturday, with the doubles team of Natalia Mayagoitia and Carolina Maso featuring for the day by earning a spot in the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open championship match.
"I was a little bit disappointed in our performance on Friday, but today was so much better," head coach David Wong said. "I think with the rain delays, the starting, stopping and warming up again, we got out of our routine a bit. It can be a hassle and playing late at night didn't help. We have to be able to adjust and deal with adversity because that type of thing can happen in any tournament. Today was more of what we need to do."
Mayagoitia and Maso earned a berth into the title match by nature of an 8-6 decision over Nadia Dubsanskaya and Tatyana Postnikova of Southland foe Sam Houston State, and they will take on Sandra Burges and Chelsea Horan of host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday.
In singles action, Mayagoitia also had a day to remember. After dropping a match on Friday to UTPA's Wanda Beguelin, the senior posted a tight 7-6, 3-6, 12-10 victory over Postnikova and then knocked off another Bearkat in Natalie Petaia in 6-0, 6-2 fashion to set up a meeting against a third SHSU athlete in Maddie Mortimore.
Alessandra Pennesi picked up a victory in her first match of the day, defeating Dubyanskaya 6-0, 6-3 but fell to Mortimore in the second, 6-1, 6-3.
Carolina Maso dropped her only match, falling to Horan 6-2, 5-7, 10-6, and Lara Bogdan picked up a calf injury to bow out of the event.
The Lady Cards will return to action on Sunday morning.
