CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - After a less than spectacular first day of the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open on Friday, Lamar women's tennis coach David Wong wasn't sure what to expect, but on Sunday his duo of Carolina Maso and Natalia Mayagoitia delivered a tournament championship in the doubles competition, knocking off Sandra Burges and Chelea Horan of host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 8-2.
"After she lost early, I think Maso realized how important playing for every single point is," Wong said. "She put a lot of effort into her doubles play with Natalia, and I really have to give credit to them for sticking with the strategy and accomplishing the goal."
The match served as a bit of revenge for Maso as she had fallen to Horan in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Mayagoitia competed in the only other Lamar match of the day, but she ultimately fell to Maddie Mortimore of Sam Houston State, who won 7-5, 2-6, 14-12.
The Lady Cards will return to action on September 28 when they open up play at the Stephen F. Austin Invitational in Nacogdoches, Texas.
