WACO, Texas - Freshman Mariaryeni Gutierrez continued the impressive start to her Lamar University tennis career, leading the way for the Lady Cardinals strong showing at the HEB Women's Baylor Invitational, by winning the singles "B" draw.

After blowing through the first four rounds of play, Gutierrez continued her strong play by defeating Narine Kazarova of North Texas 6-4, 6-3 to claim the title. She started the tournament with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Joanne Karaitiana of Oklahoma State before breezing by Peta Taylor of Sam Houston State 6-2, 6-0. In the quarterfinal round she defeated Kim Van Der Horst of Louisiana Lafayette 6-3, 6-3 and punched her ticket to the finals with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Ally Mueller of Ohio State in the semifinal.

Also competing in the "B" draw was Maria Gutierrez, who defeated Shannon McKenzie of North Texas 6-1, 6-1 in the opening round before falling to Myrthe Molenveld of ULL 6-3, 7-5.

Manijee Ashrafi dropped her opening match in the B draw 6-4, 6-2 to Mueller of Ohio State, leading to a run to the semifinals of the consolation bracket. She started the consolation with a 6-1, 7-5 win over Lynley Wasson of the University of Houston, advanced to the quarterfinals with a bye and defeated McKenzie of UNT 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the semis. In the semifinal round Ashrafi was defeated by eventual consolation champion Karaitiana of OSU 6-1, 6-3.

In the "C" draw, another Lamar newcomer had a strong showing as Salina Aranda made her way to the semifinals before being ousted by Cami Hubbs of Ohio State 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. She opened the tournament with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jordan McCombs of Houston, followed by a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Lidiya Tsurkanu of Sam Houston. In her quarterfinal match Aranda coasted past Holly Phillips of UT-San Antonio 6-0, 6-2.

Manami Kuroda prevailed in her opening match of the "C" draw, taking out Roxana Martinez of SHSU 6-4, 7-5, before falling to Julie Voss of Ohio State 7-5, 6-1 in the second round. Anahita Jagtiani dropped her opening round match to Sarah Drummond of Abilene Christian 6-3, 6-1 and fell in her only match of the consolation bracket 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (5) to Lauren White of ACU.



In the "A" draw Andrea Martinez dropped a close match her opening match to Zuzana Chmelarova of Baylor 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. She then fell in her only match of the consolation, as Nataliya Shatkowskaya of Oklahoma State edged her out 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (3).

In doubles play the Lady Cardinals the tandem of Martinez and Ashrafi made a run to the finals of the "A" draw consolation bracket before falling to Pavi Frances and Kristen Reid of SMU 8-2. In their first match of the consolation the LU pair knocked out Forward and McCombs of UH 8-4, and then beat Madura Ranganathan and Amy Joubert of North Texas 8-3 to advance to the finals. In their first doubles match of the tournament Martinez and Ashrafi were defeated by Christine Johnston and Alaina Trgorich of Kentucky 8-0.

In the doubles "B" draw the Gutierrez sisters picked up a consolation round victory over Eleonora Kuruc and Roxanna Martinez of SHSU 8-6 before falling to eventual consolation champs Aina Rafolo and Irene Sqvillaci of ACU 8-3. In their opening match of doubles play the sisters were defeated by Monica Neveklouska and Kseniia Tokarieva of SMU 8-6.

Lady Cardinals tennis will be back in action on Thursday, October 18 when they travel to Lubbock, Texas for the ITA Regional tournament.
