LAFAYETTE, La. – Alicia Porte and Anna Spengler each picked up victories this weekend as the Lamar women’s tennis team continued its fall schedule at the Ragin’ Cajun Fall Classic, hosted by Louisiana at Cajun Courts.
Porte, who was competing in the Jambalaya Flight, bounced back from an opening 6-3, 6-2 loss to ULM’s Sophia Rufyiriki on Friday to take home a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Grace Nolan from first-year Southland member New Orleans. The senior out of France was not as fortunate in the consolation final on Saturday however, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Marta Sramkova of Louisiana Tech.
In the Gumbo flight, Spengler got started on a positive note, beating Southern Miss’ Kathrin Waidner in 6-1, 6-4 fashion on Friday. She would fall 6-3, 6-1 later in the day to Janie Nowland of Arkansas State. Saturday’s third-place match played out in similar fashion as the German freshman lost 6-2, 6-1 to Anna Ruis of UNO.
Katya Lapayeva, Nadiya Kulibaba and Robyn Summers each went 0-3 in their respective flights. Lapayeva lost to Roseline Dion (6-4, 6-7, 7-4), Justyna Krol (6-4, 7-6) and Juliette Clement (6-1, 6-3) in the Boudin bracket. Kulibaba fell to Julie Cremers (7-5, 6-0), Soledad Calderom (6-0, 6-2) and Marta Sams (6-1, 6-3) in the Po Boy Flight, and in the Red Beans & Rice Flight, Summers dropped matches to Angela Tejedor (6-0, 6-0), Anna Peacock (6-0, 6-3) and Klara Skopac (6-0, 6-1).
In doubles, Kulibaba and Porte teamed up against LT’s Joanna Nalbroska and Alexandra Starkova, ultimately falling 8-5 in the opening round of the Bananas Foster Flight.
