NATCHITOCHES, La. - Carolina Salas had a strong showing for the Lamar women's tennis team on Friday as the senior picked up three victories on the first day of play at the Lady Demon Invite at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.
"I'm very proud of Carolina today," head coach David Wong said. "She's been a good leader for us. Overall, we started a bit slow, but it was still a good day. We finished even, and I'm hoping tomorrow will be better."
Salas, who is competing in the tournament's top flight, picked up a 6-0, 7-6 (2) victory over Sam Houston State's Madeleine Mortimore to advance to the second round. In doubles, she combined with Alicia Porte to win 8-0 over Grambling's Tabitha Nankya and Georgia Stevenson in the first round and 8-2 against Kate Bugayenko and Valerie Terentyeva of Stephen F. Austin.
Porte and Helene Czudek also competed in Flight 1 singles, with Porte falling 6-3, 6-1 to ULM's Medy Blankvoort and Czudek losing 6-1, 6-2 to Northwestern State's Polina Konop.
In Flight 2, Natalia Mayagoitia defeated Nicole Breaux of Louisiana in 6-4, 6-2 fashion, and Alessandra Pennesi fell to ULM's Silvia Turnova 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.
Carolina Maso played in the second flight as well, dropping a 7-5, 1-6, 10-8 heartbreaker to Soledad Arroyo of New Orleans. Maso fought back from an 0-4 deficit in the opening set to take a 5-4 lead, but Arroyo had the answers late.
In doubles action, Maso and Mayagoitia rebounded from an 8-6 loss at the hands of NSU's Konop and Daniela Simonova to win 8-4 over Sandra Alquist and Juliette Clement of Louisiana.
Czudek and Dariya Dashutina
fell 8-0 to Blankvoort and Turnova.
In the second flight of doubles, Pennesi teamed up with MacKenzie Oskin of Southern Miss to post an 8-5 victory over SHSU's Mortimore and Kayla Stevenson to earn a berth into the flight championship.
Play will continue at Jack Fisher Tennis Complex on Saturday with matches set to begin at 8:30 a.m.
