HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carolina Maso and Alessandra Pennesi picked up where they left off on Saturday, closing out play at the Southern Miss Halloween Classic with championships in their respective flights as the Lamar women’s tennis team begins to wrap up its fall season.
Maso earned her victory in 6-4, 6-3 fashion over Southeastern Louisiana’s Morgan Charpene to take home the Red Draw, and Pennesi won 6-2, 6-4 over SLU’s Andriana Castillo in the Yellow Draw.
Two other Lady Cards were playing for titles, but Alicia Porte finished second in the Gold Draw after a 7-6 (3), 6-2 loss to Jacksonville State’s Raisa Guasti and Helene Czudek lost 6-2, 6-0 to Renee Villareal of SLU in the Orange Draw.
Dariya Dashutina earned a third place finish in the Green Draw with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Melissa Burckhartt.
In other singles action, Natalia Mayagoitia won 6-2, 6-0 over JSU’s Olivia Nguyen and Carolina Salas lost 6-1, 6-2 to Northwestern State’s Tatiana Larina.
In doubles, Porte and Maso rebounded from an 8-2 loss to SLU’s Castillo and Villareal with an 8-2 decision of their own over Southern Miss’ Kate Lanier and Lauren May to finish third in the Peach Draw.
Salas and Czudek came back from a loss on the first day with an 8-3 victory over Regina Nychytailova and Sarah Kriem of SLU and an 8-5 decision over ULM’s Justyna Kroll and Silvia Turnova.
Mayagoitia and Dashutina advanced to the Grey Draw championship with an 8-5 victory against Murray State’s Carla Suga and Erin Patton, but fell 8-6 to Medy Blankvoort and Iris Van Leeuwen.
Lamar will complete its fall campaign next week at the Houston Invitational.
