Women's Tennis wraps up first day at Cougar Classic

HOUSTON - Both Alicia Porte and Katya Lapayeva picked up a pair of wins on Friday as the Lamar women's tennis team competed at the Cougar Classic at John E. Hoff Courts on the campus of Houston.

Porte and Lapayeva both beat players from Prairie View A&M in singles play. Porte, a senior out of France, handed Brittany Harrell a 6-3, 6-2 decision in Flight 5, and Lapayeva bounced back from a 7-5 opening set loss to win the ensuing pair in 6-0, 6-2 fashion in the eighth flight.

In doubles, Porte teamed up with Dariya Dashutina to record an 8-6 win over Rice's Stephanie Nguyen and Jane Stewart. Lapayeva combined with fellow freshman Anna Spengler to beat Berenice Van den Bergh and Eva Dench of Texas State in 8-5 fashion.

Carolina Masó was the only other Lady Cardinal to pick up a singles victory, beating Northwestern State's Natalya Krutova 7-5, 6-2.

In other singles action, Dashutina dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Texas Tech's Rashmi Teltumbde in the fourth flight, and Taylor LeFridge of PVAMU beat Hanna Elfving 6-3, 6-2 in Flight 6. In the seventh bracket, Houston's Celia Fraser handed Spengler a 6-2, 6-3 loss.

In Flight 2 doubles, Kansas' Paulina Los and Dylan Windom won 8-1 over Masó and Elfving.

The Lady Cards will return to action for the second round of matches on Saturday.
