BEAUMONT - The Lamar women's tennis team hasn't lost a match at Thompson Family Tennis Center since 2012, and due to expected weather in the Beaumont area, the Lady Cardinals will not get a chance to put that streak to the test for the first time this season as Sunday's match against Jackson State has been moved to Saturday evening in Lafayette, La.
The Lady Cards dropped their season opener a fortnight ago at Rice, and squad is undoubtedly looking forward to getting back to work. Dariya Dashutina, an All-Southland honoree in 2013, looks to lead the young LU team, with help from fellow senior Alicia Porte and junior Carolina Masó. Overall, the trio combined for 31 singles victories last spring, with Masó and Dashutina each chipping in 11.
However, the rest of head coach David Wong's squad is comprised of freshmen. Hanna Elfving, Katya Lapayeva and Anna Spengler hail from Sweden, Belarus and Germany, respectively, and all three are expected to play major roles in Lamar's line-up this season after combining for 15 victories in the fall. Ukrainian Nadiya Kulibaba and Beaumont West Brook graduate Robyn Summers round out the squad.
Jackson State, which will take on New Orleans on Friday and Louisiana immediately before Lamar on Saturday, carries an 0-3 record into the weekend, losing at Ole Miss, South Alabama and Southern Miss.
First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. at Cajun Courts.
