BEAUMONT - After a 1-4 start to the 2013 season, the Lamar men's tennis team will look to get back on track this weekend with a pair of matches in San Antonio.
"We've been learning a lot with our first part of the season, and a lot of the opponents were nationally-ranked," head coach Scott Shankles said. "That's been great for getting us ready for some of the teams this weekend. We really don't know much about Nevada, and we're very familiar with San Antonio. We're really looking forward to some big battles this weekend against two tough teams."
Three of Lamar's four losses have come to nationally ranked opponents.
The Cardinals will open on Saturday with a match against Nevada, who is entering the weekend with a 3-3 record on the season. The Wolf Pack came into this week with consecutive losses but got back on track with a 5-2 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday in San Antonio. The meeting marks the first-ever between Lamar's men's tennis team and a school from the state of Nevada.
Sunday's meeting will be a rekindling of an old conference match-up as the Cards will take on former Southland foe UTSA. LU will be looking for its first win over the Roadrunners. The two sides have clashed twice since Shankles took over, with the Cards falling in 5-2 fashion both times.
Saturday's match vs. Nevada will begin at 11 a.m., and Sunday's showdown with the Roadrunners is set for 11 a.m. as well. Both matches will be played at UTSA Tennis Center.
