PLANO - Lamar women's tennis player Tara Shelander earned her first Southland Conference Player of the Week award on Wednesday, after posting a perfect 4-0 week in singles and doubles play last weekend.
The sophomore from Beaumont played all four singles matches at the No. 2 position, upping her record to 5-3 on the year. She helped the Lady Cardinals win four consecutive matches last weekend, knocking off Centenary College, Alcorn State, Samford University and Grambling State.
A graduate of Kelly HS, Shelander also paired with teammate Andrea Martinez to roll through the competition with a flawless 4-0 record in doubles play. She and Martinez extended their winning streak to seven straight, while improving to 7-1 on the year, with all matches played at the No. 1 spot.
Shelander and the Lady Cardinals return to action on Mar. 5 with an 11 a.m. league match at McNeese State in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Lamar's non-conference match with UNC-Wilmington, originally scheduled for Sun., Feb. 27, has been canceled.
