The Lamar University women's tennis team opens the 2006 Southland Conference schedule Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., when they take on the Ladyjacks of Stephen F. Austin at 2 p.m. at the Cardinal Courts.
Lamar comes into the match with a 4-3 record, on the heels of a 6-1 loss to No. 43 LSU on February 26. The Lady Cards have wins over Texas A&M Corpus Christi, St. Edward's, UT-Pan American and Centenary College.
Lamar is led by the doubles tandem of Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander. The duo is ranked 33rd nationally, and has a season record of 6-1 after they defeated the No.1 doubles team from LSU which is currently ranked 34th.
In singles action the Lady Cards have been led by Andrea Martinez who is 5-2 on the year at the No. 1 spot, and Maria Gutierrez who has posted a 5-1 record playing in the five spot. In the No. 2 spot Shelander has posted a 4-3 record, while Tanya Roberts and Pamela Martinez have each gone 4-3 in the third and fourth spots respectively.
Stephen F. Austin enters the contest with a 4-4 record, on the heels of a 7-0 loss at Sam Houston State.
After Tuesday's match, the Lady Cardinals will remain at home for a Saturday afternoon match against McNeese State.
