Women's Tennis set for four-match road swing
March 11, 2013
BEAUMONT – After originally being slated to open conference play on Sunday, the Lamar women’s tennis team will now begin its Southland slate against Nicholls and Southeastern Louisiana on the tail-end of a whirlwind week that features non-conference showdowns against both South Alabama and Troy.
Sunday’s originally-scheduled SLC opener vs. McNeese has been rescheduled for March 21 at 3 p.m. Despite being called off in progress, the match will begin anew due to ITA scheduling rules.
The Lady Cardinals are 4-4 this season with all four losses coming away from home, including three to ranked opponents.
The road swing will begin with a trip to Mobile, to take on South Alabama at Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts. The Jaguars boast of an 8-4 record and carry a 9-1 mark vs. the Lady Cards, including a 6-1 decision last season.
Two days later, Troy will be the school taking the trek to Mobile to take on the Lady Cards. The Lady Trojans are 10-4 this year and are coming into the week with six consecutive victories. Prior to Thursday’s meeting, they will play Eastern Kentucky.
On Saturday, the Lady Cards will try once more to open conference play, setting out for Thibodaux to take on Nicholls prior to rounding out the trip with a match at Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday. Nicholls is 9-5 this season and SLU is 11-0, and both carry unblemished 2-0 conference marks.
Lamar has won six of its last seven conference openers, falling to Texas State last season. Under the direction of head coach David Wong is 11-1 vs. Nicholls and 5-9 vs. Southeastern with five consecutive victories.
