BEAUMONT – After splitting opening weekend at home last time out, the Lamar women’s tennis team will be looking to continue improving this weekend with road trips to conference foes Nicholls and McNeese State.
The Lady Cardinals (3-5) began Southland play with a 4-3 win over New Orleans last Saturday, but they weren’t as fortunate a day later, falling to defending champion Southeastern Louisiana in 5-2 fashion. Katya Lapayeva was the star of the weekend, as she was the only Card to win in both matches.
Lapayeva, a native of Belarus, is one of three freshmen getting regular playing time in the LU lineup, and she’s been the most successful, winning six of eight matches to lead all Lady Cards. Hanna Elfving, who picked up the clinching victory over New Orleans, and Anna Spengler, who earned the other point vs. Southeastern Louisiana, have combined for four victories this season.
Dariya Dashutina leads the veteran contingent, and she’s coming off a dominating No. 1 singles win over New Orleans last weekend. It marked the Ukrainian’s third victory this spring, which is tied for the second-most wins on the team. Both Carolina Masó and Alicia Porte have also chipped in wins, and the duo has won twice in doubles, which leads the Lady Cards.
Nicholls is currently tied with LU in the conference standings with a 1-1 record and a 7-4 overall mark. McNeese, which will play Sam Houston State on Saturday, is 1-0 in Southland play and 6-4 on the year.
