BEAUMONT – The Lamar women’s tennis team will take a brief reprieve from Southland Conference play this weekend as Prairie View A&M will make the trip to Thompson Family Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Lady Cardinals (3-7) are looking to put a stop to a three-game skid after dropping a pair of road matches at Nicholls and McNeese State this past weekend. LU will look to continue its good form vs. the Panthers, which has included six consecutive wins over the last seven years.
If LU is to be successful, it will likely depend on the team’s cadre of young freshmen, beginning with Belarus import Katya Lapayeva, who leads the team with six victories on the year. Anna Spengler is second on the team in wins with three, and both Nadiya Kulibaba and Hanna Elfving have each picked up one.
Dariya Dashutina is the standout veteran. The Ukrainian leads the group with three wins, and the duo of Alicia Porte and Carolina Masó has combined for three singles victories and a team-best three in doubles.
The Lady Cards were originally scheduled to follow up with a match vs. Sam Houston State on Sunday, but due to expected inclement weather, the match has been re-scheduled for April 10 at 2 p.m.
First serve on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
