Women's Tennis set to close out home slate

April 12, 2013

BEAUMONT – With the Southland Conference Championships just around the corner, the Lamar women’s tennis team will be looking to pick up some momentum this weekend by taking on Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.

The two matches are the last of the regular season and will offer a chance for the Lady Cardinals to bolster their seeding heading into the conference tournament, which will be held in Beaumont later this month. Also, it marks the last regular season matches for LU seniors Natalia Mayagoitia, Alessandra Pennesi and Carolina Salas.

The trio has combined for 112 singles victories in 185 matches over the past four spring seasons.

Prior to Sunday’s Senior Day festivities, however, there is a match to be played. Lamar and NSU both enter with a 5-2 mark in conference play and sit just a half-game back of second-place Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. With a pair of wins this weekend and an Islander loss, the Lady Cards would clinch the No. 2 seed at the tournament.

First place Southeastern Louisiana is 7-1 and holds the tie-breaker over LU.

NSU is currently carrying a 10-6 record overall this season. Lamar head coach David Wong is 7-7 all-time vs. the Lady Demons, but has picked up wins in two of the last three meetings, including a 5-2 decision in Natchitoches last season. The current crop of seniors was especially important in the meeting as each won their respective singles match.

On Sunday, the Lady Cards will play host to SFA, which with a 4-2 SLC mark, is also looking to close out conference play in style. The Ladyjacks have only won four meetings in 12 opportunities vs. Wong’s teams, but took home the victory last year in 6-1 fashion.

First serve on Saturday is set for 11 a.m., and play on Sunday will start at noon. Also on Sunday, a ceremony will be held in between doubles and singles to honor each senior.
