BEAUMONT - It will be a busy day at Thompson Family Tennis Center on Sunday, and head coach David Wong hopes it will be a memorable one as the Lamar women's tennis team will celebrate its annual Senior Day with a match against Abilene Christian.
Two Lady Cardinal seniors are in line to be honored, beginning with Alicia Porte, who has spent four years in Beaumont, collecting 29 dual singles victories in the process. The Marseille, France, native's been even more impressive in doubles, picking up 33 wins, including a team-best total of five this season. She's in line to be a part of LU's best doubles tandem for the third consecutive season.
Dariya Dashutina is LU's other senior, and she has spent much of the 2014 campaign at No. 1 singles for the Lady Cards. A native of Kharkov, Ukraine, Dashutina's collected a grand total of 34 singles wins, including 18 in dual play. This season, she's second on the team with seven wins in singles and three in doubles.
If the seniors are to celebrate in style on Sunday, it will likely depend on some significant contributions from freshmen. Katya Lapayeva leads the team in singles wins this season with 10, and Anna Spengler has been particularly impressive as of late, chalking up three straight singles victories without dropping a set in the process.
Another freshman, Hanna Elfving, has three singles wins on the year, and Carolina Masó, a junior, has four.
LU will be looking to build off a 4-3 victory over Sam Houston State earlier this week, and the Lady Cards are 6-11 on the year with a 3-5 mark in Southland play.
ACU is 14-4 this season with a 6-2 league mark and enter the encounter on a three-match league winning streak, beating Nicholls, McNeese State and SHSU.
Both the LU men and women will be taking on the Wildcats at Thompson Family Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon, and first serve is scheduled for noon. Senior day festivities for the women will begin at 11:45 a.m.
