BEAUMONT – It will be a day of lasts at Thompson Family Tennis Center on Tuesday as the Lamar women’s tennis team will play its final home match of the season and its final conference meeting with Oral Roberts, which will be leaving the Southland over the summer.
With a 6-12 record and a 3-6 Southland mark, the Lady Cardinals are angling for a spot in the conference tournament later this month, and ORU is coming into the match with a 3-13 overall record with an 0-9 showing in conference matches.
LU will be looking to shake off a 4-3 heart-breaker to Abilene Christian on Sunday. The Lady Cards and Wildcats were all even at 3-3 and held a lead in the deciding set on Court 6 before a storm caused the match to be moved to Houston, where ACU would rally to take home the victory.
Anna Spengler, who came out on the losing side in that fateful match, saw her three-match winning streak snapped, and she’s one of three freshmen regulars in the LU lineup. The group is led by Katya Lapayeva’s team-best 11-7 singles record, and Spengler and Hanna Elfving have combined for nine more wins. The duo of Lapayeva and Spengler also has four doubles wins.
Dariya Dashutina and Alicia Porte will look to lead the veteran group as the tandem will be playing their final LU matches at Thompson Family Tennis Center. Dashutina is second on the team with seven singles wins at the top spot, and Porte has five to go along with a team-leading six doubles wins alongside partner Carolina Masó.
Masó has four victories in singles this season, playing primarily at No. 2.
First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
