BEAUMONT – The Lamar women’s tennis team may still have some work to do this weekend to make next week’s Southland Tournament, and the Lady Cardinals will have their work cut out for them, hitting the road to take on Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin.

The Lady Cards are 7-12 this season and currently hold the eighth and final spot in the annual conference tournament, but New Orleans sits just a half-game behind LU going into its final three games. This week’s competition may prove stiff as Northwestern State (15-5, 8-1 Southland) will be aiming to catch Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the regular season crown, and Stephen F. Austin (9-9, 6-4 Southland), currently tied for fifth, will be shooting for a spot in the top half of the field.

Lady Cards complete perfect home slate with 7-0 rout of SFA

BEAUMONT -- It was a Senior Day to remember for Natalia Mayagoitia, Alessandra Pennesi and Carolina Salas as the trio headlined a 7-0 drubbing of visiting Stephen F. Austin at Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center on Sunday.

New Orleans is slated to take on Nicholls, McNeese State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

If the Cards are to be successful, chances are that both Katya Lapayeva and Dariya Dashutina will play a role in it. Lapayeva currently leads the team with a 12-7 record with a 6-4 league mark, and Dashutina is 8-10 and 5-4, respectively. Anna Spengler has also been a revelation in conference play as it accounts for five of her seven victories on the year.

Alicia Porte is fourth on the team with five wins, and both Hanna Elfving and Carolina Masó have earned four.

First serve on Friday at Northwestern State is set for 11 a.m., and Saturday’s match with SFA is scheduled for noon.
