PLANO - Following an undefeated week, Lamar sophomore Andrea Martinez earned this season's final Southland Conference Women's Tennis `Player of the Week' award on Tuesday, according to league officials.
The award is the first one of the '05 spring season for Martinez, who also won last season's final weekly honor as a freshman. The Durango, Mexico native posted a flawless singles and doubles record at the No. 1 position last week against non-conference foes Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and nationally-ranked Houston. She extended her singles win streak to seven with wins over the Islanders' Carlota Santos and #70 Houston's Biljana Dimovska. The loss to Martinez was the first of the spring for Santos and it was only her second loss in 33 career matches.
Martinez also paired with teammate Tara Shelander to extend their No. 1 doubles win streak to six. The Lady Cardinal duo defeated TAMU-CC's top team, 8-1, to up their season mark to 21-2. The 21 wins is a Lamar single-season record.
The second-year player has played a key role in helping the LU women's team qualify for this weekend's six-team SLC tournament in San Antonio. The Lady Cards will make their first postseason appearance since earning a berth to the 2000 league tournament.
