BEAUMONT – The Lamar women’s tennis team ended the season with a bit of momentum, and they’ll be looking to continue it this weekend as the Lady Cardinals are set to take on regular season champion Northwestern State in the opening round of the Southland Conference Tournament at Thomas J. Henry Center on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

The eighth-seeded Lady Cards finished the year with an 8-13 record and a 5-7 Southland mark, but they are entering the tournament on the heels of an impressive 5-2 victory at Stephen F. Austin, which will be competing in the event as the No. 5 seed.

Lady Cards fall 4-0 at Northwestern State

NATCHITOCHES, La. - Northwestern State grabbed the doubles point and never looked back on Friday as the Lamar women's tennis team fell 4-0 at Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.

Three LU freshmen have made a huge impact for the team in recent weeks, and all appear to be hitting their stride at the right time. Katya Lapayeva, who has a 13-7 record this season and a 7-4 Southland mark, has picked up wins in seven of her last 10 decisions. Anna Spengler has earned five of the last seven, and she boasts of a 6-5 league record. Hanna Elfving rounds out the group with two straight victories. All three currently make up the bottom half of the line-up.

Dariya Dashutina has eight wins this season with all but one of them coming at line one to lead the veteran top half of the card. Both Carolina Masó and Alicia Porte have five wins apiece and have combined for a team-best 6-7 doubles mark.

Top-seeded Northwestern State, winners of last season’s Southland Tournament, finished this year’s campaign with an 11-1 conference record to share the regular season crown with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Lady Demons are 18-5 overall.

The winner between NSU and LU will go on to face the winner of Stephen F. Austin and Nicholls in the semifinal on Saturday.

First serve on Friday is slated for 11 a.m.
