Lamar University's Maria Gutierrez was named to the 2007 Capital One Southland Conference women's tennis all-academic first-team on Tuesday.
Gutierrez, a sophomore from San Antonio, Venezuela, who has a 3.82 GPA in civil engineering, also earned CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All District VI University Division second team honors last month.
Gutierrez helped the Lady Cardinal tennis team to a fourth place finish in the Southland Conference this season, posting a record of 13-7 in singles play during the spring season. She compiled a 10-5 record at No. 2 singles, went 3-1 at No. 3 and 0-1 at No. 4, while posting a 12-11 record in doubles play.
The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were selected all-conference and/or named as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team's competition.
