The Hurricane relief fundraiser tennis tournament hosted by the Lamar University tennis team on September 17-18, to help raise money for victims of Hurricane Katrina currently living in Beaumont, was a major success raising $1,475.
The tournament, held at the Lamar University Tennis Courts, attracted 76 participants who competed in boys and girls doubles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles. Entry fees for the tournament were $50 for each event, and were paid for with a gas gift card, a Wal-Mart gift card or cash.
Member of the men's and women's tennis teams from LU were on hand at the tournament supporting the participants.
Lamar head tennis coach David Wong was very pleased with the success of the tournament, and was glad the Cardinal tennis teams were able to help.
"We had a great turnout for the tournament and we raised a good amount of money," he said. "We had a great time out there and everyone involved had a lot of fun. I'm glad we could raise some money, hopefully it will help in the process of getting things back to normal."
