BEAUMONT – There will be plenty of new faces in the fold with the Lamar women’s tennis program this season, and this weekend offers the first chance for many of them to compete in the red and white as the team will head out to the Marco & Co. Catering Islanders Open on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Among the six freshmen joining the program, four have made significant treks from Europe. Hanna Elfving is coming off an accomplished prep career in Sweden that featured 150 top-three finishes in national events, and Katya Lapayeva is a 10-time regional champion out of Belarus. Nadiya Kulibaba has been ranked as high as 25th in her native Ukraine, and Anna Spengler took home a number of tournament crowns in Germany.
For the first time in several years, the team also features a pair of Golden Triangle standouts in Robyn Summers (Beaumont) and Kelli Creel (Nederland). The latter of which will not be competing this weekend.
A pair of seniors and a junior will round out the team. Alicia Porte and Dariya Dashutina are looking to put a stamp on their final year in Beaumont. The duo combined for 20 singles victories last spring. The lone junior, Carolina Masó, won 11 matches in the spring and also took home an Islanders Open doubles title with current LU graduate assistant Natalia Mayagoitia.
The first day of play at the Islanders Open will be Friday, and the event is scheduled to wrap up on Sunday.
