Lady Cardinals Tennis Has Strong Showing at SFA Invitational

NACODOCHES, Texas - The Lamar University women's tennis team finished off a solid weekend at the Stephen F. Austin Invitational on Saturday, claiming two singles titles and one doubles title. The Lady Cardinals advanced to the finals in all four flights they played in on Saturday, winning flights three and four while taking second flights one and two and third in flight one. Carla Nava won the flight three singles title with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 win over Northwestern State's Bianca Schulz in the final. The Lady Cardinals other title came when Manami Kuroda defetad Elena Kuruk of Sam Houston 6-4, 6-4. In flight No. 1 Mariaryeni Gutierrez dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to SHSU's Irina Sotnikova in the championship match, while her sister Maria Gutierrez took out Erika Iriarte of Texas A&M Corpus Christi 7-6, 7-6 to claim third place. In flight two Manijee Ashrafi lost in the championship match to Alina Shuzko of Stephen F Austin 6-4, 6-2. In doubles action the Lady Cardinals duo of Ashrafi and Kuroda claimed the Flight two title with an 8-6 win over the team of O'Riley and Kruse from Texas State. In flight three Nava and Constanza Gonzales finished in second place after falling 8-5 to Kazarova and Akin of North Texas while Gutierrez and Gutierrez finished in fourth place after falling to Wilhelm and Paraschiv of North Texas.
