BEAUMONT - Neither Lara Bogdan nor Dariya Dashutina boast of much experience on the tennis court in a Lamar shirt, but they are set to get a whole lot more this week as they head to Nacogdoches, Texas, to play in this weekend's Stephen F. Austin Invitational.
"I'm only taking two players this weekend so I can continue to get more familiar with my players," head coach David Wong said. "I want to give them more attention because they are newer players on the team. That way I can get into more specific stuff when they compete."
Wong has made a habit of taking smaller groups over the first few tournaments of the season, taking teams of just four players to events at Auburn and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
"More than getting matches in, this is just to learn more about my players," Wong said. "I want to learn what makes them tick. I want to know what their strengths and weakness are, and then we can work on the weakness."
Dashutina, a graduate of Seward County Community College, made her Lamar debut at the Auburn Invitational earlier this month, and Bogdan, who missed last season due to a shoulder injury, played at the Islander Invitational in Corpus Christi.
Play at the SFA Invitational will begin on Friday at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
