BEAUMONT – After taking small groups to each of the first three tournaments, head coach David Wong will be taking all eight members of the Lamar women’s tennis team to Lafayette, La., this weekend for the UL Invitational.
“I think this is going to be a good indication of where we are as a team,” Wong said. “It’s flighted, and it’s going to let us see how we measure up. I’m excited to see our performance this weekend. I think the girls have been practicing well, and we’ve been working on our weaknesses. I’m looking forward to it.”
The tournament serves as the first measure of his early season strategy of taking four or fewer players to the first three events, a tactic that Wong believes will pay off in both the short and long term.
“I think taking the small groups helped me tremendously,” he explained. “It allowed me to see how every player performed under pressure individually. When you bring a lot of players, you can only catch a few points here and there, but when you take two or four, you can really see more details and how they handle situations.”
It’s something that also excites the players.
“It’s going to be the first time we’ve traveled with the whole team, and we’re all excited about it,” junior Helene Czudek said. “We’ve been to this tournament before, and we like it. We’re happy to be going there.”
The tournament will feature a number of teams from around the region, including conference foes McNeese State, Northwestern State and Southeastern Louisiana. Matches are set to begin around 8:30 a.m. on Friday.
