BEAUMONT - Freshman Julie Paciotti won the flight six singles title to lead the Lamar women's tennis team at this weekend's Lady Cardinal Invitational, held at the Cardinal Courts on the LU campus.

Paciotti knocked off Sam Houston's Bethany Yurkiw 6-0, 6-2 in the first round and then advanced to the flight final after a bye in the semi-final. In the final, Paciotti knocked off Whitney De Young of Stephen F. Austin, 6-3 and 6-2.

Sophomore Andrea Martinez won third place in the flight two singles draw with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Emma McDougall of Sam Houston. She posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Filipa Figueiredo of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the first round.

Junior Kendall Gibbs rebounded from a first-round loss in the flight four singles bracket to win the consolation title. Gibbs advanced to the consolation final after McNeese State's Debora Montero retired following a 7-5 first-set loss. She then took care of Southeastern Louisiana's Maja Bradonjic by scores of 6-2, 3-6 and 10-8.

Marine LeRoy advanced to the flight five singles final before falling to MSU's Madeline Hakansson, 6-1 and 6-2. LeRoy recorded wins over UT-Pan American's Kara Henderson and SFA's Kara Scott to advance to the final.

In doubles action, LeRoy and Paciotti overcame a first-round loss in the third flight to win the consolation with an 8-3 win over the UTPA pairing of Kara Henderson and Angela Saenz.

LU's Tara Shelander and Martinez also played well, advancing to the first flight final before bowing out to the SLU tandem of Brenda Kovac and Nina Knavs, 8-3.

The Lady Cardinals return to action next weekend with the Stephen F. Austin Invitational on Sat. and Sun., Oct. 2-3.
