COLLEGE STATION - The Lamar women's tennis team put together a solid showing on Friday, in the first day of action at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional, hosted by Texas A&M at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center and the adjoining recreation courts.

Sophomores Andrea Martinez and Tara Shelander both advanced to the round of 16 in singles play, after posting a pair of impressive matches. Martinez, a native of Durango, Mexico, recorded a pair of straight set victories over Southland Conference foes on her way to a Saturday morning duel with Staten Spencer of LSU. Martinez knocked off Stephen F. Austin's Lauren Nowicki, 6-2 and 6-4, before rolling past Sam Houston State's Mounia Hassib, 6-1 and 6-3.

Shelander blanked Centenary's Christine Majchrowcz, 6-0, 6-0, before outlasting SHSU's Lata Assudani, 6-4, 5-7 and 7-5. Shelander will square off with Kendall Exelby of Texas-El Paso at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Should they continue to advance, Shelander and Martinez would not meet until the singles final.

Senior Hayley Bakker also won her first-round singles match, topping Northwestern State's Alexandra Nieto, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Unfortunately, she lost in the round of 32, so Bakker will take on Texas State's Melanie Hall in the first round of the consolation bracket at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.

In doubles action, Bakker teammed with junior Kendall Gibbs for an 8-6 first-round win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi tandem of Lana Burton and Lauren Schmidt. Bakker and Gibbs will return to action Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. when they take on the top-seeded pairing of Katie Ruckert and Kendra Strohm from the University of Texas.

Shelander and Martinez lost their first-round doubles match, 8-6, to the University of Houston duo of Tiffany McLaughlin and Yolandi Terblanche. The LU couple will play in the first round of the consolation bracket at 3:30 p.m., Saturday afternoon against Texas-Arlington's Paula Mesterova and Anete Rozkalne.

Doubles and singles action is slated to continue through Monday, Oct. 18.
