COLLEGE STATION - The Lamar women's tennis team continued to play well on Saturday, in the second day of action at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional, hosted by Texas A&M at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
In singles action, Tara Shelander advanced to the quarterfinal round of the qualifying bracket and she also earned a spot in the main singles draw after posting a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kendall Exelby of Texas-El Paso on Saturday. She will take on Sahara Uriarte of Louisiana Tech on Sunday.
Sophomore Andrea Martinez lost in her bid for a quarterfinal spot, falling to Staten Spencer of LSU, 6-3 and 6-4. Senior Hayley Bakker was able to advance to the quarterfinals of the qualifying consolation bracket after knocking off Texas State's Melanie Hall, 6-3, 6-2. Bakker will take on Monica Kelly of La. Tech on Sunday.
In doubles action, Shelander and Martinez advanced to the second round of the consolation bracket with an 8-6 win over Texas-Arlington's Paula Mesterova and Anete Rozkalne. Bakker and teammate Kendall Gibbs were also sent to the consolation bracket after dropping an 8-3 contest to the top-seeded pairing of Katie Ruckert and Kendra Strohm from the University of Texas. Both teams will continue consolation bracket play at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
